Dear Calgary 5 Pin Bowlers’ Association Members,
I would like to take this opportunity to address a recent decision made at the last Calgary 5 Pin Bowlers’ Association board meeting. For those of you who are not aware, a substantial portion of Calgary 5 Pin’s program funding comes via Gaming proceeds through the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC). There is a defined set of policies around how these proceeds can be used by our association, and the AGLC requires periodic reporting of how the funds are being spent. In addition to these reports, the AGLC is within their rights to audit any association or group who receives Gaming proceeds. Presently, the majority of the bowlers’ associations within our province receive AGLC Gaming proceeds to support their programming.
Recently, the Edmonton 5 Pin Bowlers’ Association was audited by the AGLC with regards to the use of their Gaming proceeds. This audit resulted in a substantial amount owing back into their Gaming account, which has to come from their General funds. Edmonton 5 Pin was given a deadline for repayment by the AGLC and, as such, Edmonton 5 Pin approached the Calgary 5 Pin board for assistance with meeting their repayment deadline.
The Calgary 5 Pin board has not taken the decision of whether to assist the Edmonton 5 Pin Bowlers’ Association lightly. I had preliminary discussions with our treasurer, Eric Christensen, regarding this matter and ultimately it was brought forward at the September 18, 2016 meeting of the Calgary 5 Pin board. After a very lengthy period of discussion and debate, the Calgary 5 Pin board passed a motion to issue the Edmonton 5 Pin Bowlers’ Association a conditional loan of $30,000 which will serve to assist them with their repayment of Gaming account proceeds.
I would like to stress that this decision does not involve Calgary 5 Pin’s Gaming proceeds and will in no way impact the programming currently offered by Calgary 5 Pin to our members. Through a history of fiscal responsibility, Calgary 5 Pin was fortunate to find itself in a position to be able to assist our fellow association in Edmonton. Both the Calgary 5 Pin and Edmonton 5 Pin boards strive to provide the best possible experiences for our members. This decision was made with the best interests of both association’s members in mind. We truly believe in this sport and the community that surrounds it, both now and into the future.
On behalf of the Calgary 5 Pin board, I want to thank you for your continued support and appreciate your understanding with respect to this difficult matter. This board aims to represent you, our members, and we are always here to discuss any questions or concerns that you may have. Please do not hesitate to approach me directly or, if you would prefer, fill out the “contact us” form located on our website: http://www.calgary5pin.ca. Through your feedback, we can continue to provide you with the best possible experience as a member of our association.
Yours in bowling,
President, Calgary 5 Pin Bowlers’ Association
A huge thank you to all our volunteers who helped us with our Casino on September 1st and 2nd. It was a great success, and we added over $70,000.00 to the pool fund. A special thank you to Kyle Greggain, Eric Christensen, Colin Christensen, and Joey Wood who worked the night shift in the cash cage. These 4 crazy boys kept the bankers, cage advisors, and myself laughing until we hurt! Some of the conversations taking place even had customers hanging around to listen and have a laugh.
Once again, we were given an amazing compliment from Deerfoot Casino on our great volunteers. They were impressed with how well we all worked together to make it a successful event.
We are very fortunate in Calgary to have a great core of regular volunteers who are always there when we need them, and this casino also brought us some new volunteers. It is always great to have new faces help us, and we always need to see more at our events.
In the new 2016 and 2017 season, we will be hosting the 2017 POA Provincials on January 14th and 15th, and the POA Nationals from April 26th through April 30th. If you can help us in any way with these events, please contact me and I will add you to our list. We will be looking for volunteers to help in many areas, so please don’t think that there is nothing that you could do to help. I love seeing new faces!!!
The Calgary 5 Pin Board of Executives would like to take this time to welcome all our bowlers back to the new bowling season at the various bowling centres in our zones. Please feel free to contact us if there is anything that we can do for you.
Have a great season, and we wish you nothing but strikes and spares!
The Calgary 5 Pin Bowlers Association is having a Casino on September 1st and 2nd at the Deerfoot Casino, and we are looking for volunteers. The times are 10:00am until 3:00am, and we need 25 volunteers.
We would like to ask any of our bowlers that qualified in our events this past season – Hi Lo’s, POA, and Open teams along with the managers, to help with this casino as this is our main fundraiser which helps to get our bowlers to Provincials. All other bowlers are also welcome!!
If you can do a shift, please contact Maria Wood at firstname.lastname@example.org, through Facebook, or at 403-285-4575 after 6pm.
Thank you and we hope to see some new smiling faces!!!
